From Foehn to Cyclone - Winds in Transition

29 Apr 2026

USM astrophysicist Dr. David Cont discusses winds in the context of exoplanets in an ARD interview.

Meteorologists define a storm as starting at a wind speed of 75 km/h, corresponding to force 9 on the Beaufort scale. In space, scientists from Bavaria have measured winds reaching up to 33,000 km/h. But how do winds actually form, in which direction do they flow, what changes does climate change bring for winds, and what significance do winds have for our daily lives?

USM astrophysicist Dr. David Cont, Fraunhofer Schwarzschild Fellow at the Chair of Theoretical Astrophysics of Extrasolar Planets, discusses high wind speeds in the atmosphere of the exoplanet WASP-127b in an ARD interview (from 14:50 min).
